Biting while breastfeeding

by Deb Donovan

question
Dear Debbi,

My one-year-old Anna bit me while I was breastfeeding her last night and it was a significant bite. She drew blood with the inevitable yelp of pain from me. Today my breast is so sore that I am reluctant to feed her from it. We went through a biting day about a month ago and I didn't react strongly (she didn't bite hard); I just told her not to hurt mummy and stopped the feeding session. This seems more serious and is hampering my let-down reflex since I am worried about her doing it again. Any suggestions? Thanks.

answer

Dear Charissa,

It is not unusual for a baby or toddler to try out her new teeth while breastfeeding, but it can certainly hurt. Biting usually happens near the end of a feed, as your baby may begin to play around. Often a mum's strong (and natural) reaction is enough to make them never do it again. Other babies think it's funny, and others are frightened.

Before you start breastfeeding, talk to your baby, telling her that it hurts when she bites. When it looks as if she is slowing down towards the end of a feed, take her off the breast and try to interest her in something else.

If Anna does bite again, immediately remove her from your breast and say, ‘No more biting mummy’. Put her down for a minute or so. If her biting continues, be firm and consistent. Let her know that she can't feed if she bites. Most babies will not continue to bite the breast that so lovingly feeds them. Good luck.
