Dry at night – now wets the bed

by Coram Family Coram Family Logo

question
My daughter is not quite three and a year ago she was dry at night. She then had a terrible cold and for about two weeks kept bed-wetting, so we started using pull-ups. She is still in them nearly twelve months down the line. She seems to have forgotten what to do. Is using pull-ups the right thing to do? Or should we try lifting her again at night, leaving the pull-ups off?

answer
It must be very frustrating for you having got your daughter dry at night and then having her apparently take steps backwards. Don’t worry though; it’s not at all unusual.

There are lots of different ways to make children feel comfortable about going to sleep without worrying about accidents: wearing pull-ups is one, having a plastic under sheet is another, and lifting is a third.

However, all children like to succeed, which gives them confidence. It is just possible that the pull-ups have made your daughter think you don’t trust her any more, so she no longer trusts herself either and is therefore reluctant to give them up. Lifting her won’t wake her up, and may allow her to feel she can make it through the night. Cutting down on evening drinks may help too.

What ever you decide to do, tell her clearly what you’re doing. Let her know that accidents are nothing to be ashamed of, that different children manage the process at different times and in different ways, and that you think it’s time to change her routine because you’re confident she’s almost there.
