Giving up naps

by Patti Greenberg Wollman

question
I have a 13-month-old son who has just given up his naps. He still sleeps through the night but will not sleep during the day. He used to sleep for one or two hours during the morning and one hour in the afternoon. What might be causing this?

answer
Although some children nap until they are five or six, some children have the energy to go through an entire day without napping at a very early age. There is nothing wrong with your child. He simply does not need his naps any more. If your son does not seem to need one, he certainly doesn't have to have one.

Sometimes, children going through a spurt in intellectual development find the world so interesting that they spend all their time learning. Not only is this a wonderful development, but it has the added bonus of making a child tired enough at the end of the day to sleep soundly through the night.

You may feel that your son needs some down time even though he is not napping. In this case, put him down for a rest in a cot or other quiet place, with his favourite toy or blanket. He doesn't have to be sleeping to be resting and regaining strength. This may also give you the respite you need during the day.
