The plan

This eating plan states that weight loss becomes more likely if you separate certain foods and eat them in the correct combination. Therefore, any type of weight gain is due to eating patterns, not excess calories.

70 per cent of the recommended foods are fruits and vegetables; the other 30 percent consist of one or two servings of starch, such as rice or pasta, and minimum amounts of animal protein. Alcohol is allowed in moderation.

Pros

  • Eating more fruits and vegetables is highly encouraged by most health authorities.
  • Weight loss may occur rapidly, due to the limits on types of foods allowed.

Cons

  • This system can be deficient in nutrients, including calcium, zinc, and vitamins D and B12.
  • The concept of food combining is controversial, although in some cases, combining foods does enhance the absorption of nutrients. For example, eating oranges (high in vitamin C) with steak helps to increase the absorption of iron during that meal.

Duration

Indefinite.
