the workout
The typical yoga workout blends strength, flexibility and body awareness. Many classes also include a spiritual element. There are many forms of yoga, most of which are Hatha. Some, such as astanga, are more physically challenging than others and you will work up a real sweat.

upside
Yoga energises your body and calms your mind. Most people begin to see and feel improvements in their flexibility, strength and stress levels after only a few classes. It’s portable and affordable.

downside
If flexibility isn’t your strong suit, you need yoga, but trying to get into and out of some of the moves may leave you feeling frustrated. Yoga has its own terminology and initially, you may feel as if you’re trying to learn a foreign language as well as get your body into shape.

the pros say
Yoga classes range from moderately taxing to extremely challenging, so choose one that suits your abilities and fitness level. A good yoga instructor should appear calm and in control. Note whether the instructor explains the movements before doing them. She should also describe which muscles are being used and move around the room making corrections to your form if necessary.

requirements
Gear: a mat is good if not essential, and blocks or straps may help with certain positions.
Instruction/Facilities: many health clubs offer classes at no additional charge. Or, you can go to a yoga studio. Studio classes cost £7 and up, depending on where you live.
Time: Most classes last one hour or more.
