| Wine of the week: Co-op Puglia Primitivo-Sangiovese 2000
With twice the wine output of the whole of Australia, it's no surprise that Puglia in northern Italy can produce something as delicious - and as affordable - as this Sangiovese If you feel the distinct chill of Autumn in the air and fancy a chunky red in anticipation of the cold weather to come, you need look no further than your nearest Co-op. Between 17th September and 6th October, Co-op have several exciting wines - plus a malt whisky - all on special promotion prices. The one that most took my fancy is an Italian red, Co-op Puglia Primitivo-Sangiovese 2000. Rich with smokey, blackberry-like overtones and a hint of coffee on the finish, this beefy red has been aged in French oak barrels, which adds a further attractive touch of vanilla to the flavour. Try it with spicy meat and vegetarian dishes, roast beef and lamb, or jazz up a supper of bangers and mash.I'm amazed that this Sangiovese has been reduced from £3.99 to £2.99 - especially given that it was awarded a silver medal in this year's International Wine Challenge.
