| Strange sandwiches
Once the preserve of the heavily pregnant, strange sandwiches have turned into something of a national obsession. iVillage investigates... A little while back we asked if anyone had any ideas for unusual, exotic or even strange sandwiches. We expected to get one or two odd suggestions, we never doubted that there'd be the occasional `You can't be serious!' moment, but we were woefully unprepared for some of the recipes you posted. What follows is not for the faint of heart (or weak of stomach). The tone was set by erimar59, who was kind enough to suggest a meal-sized marriage of mushy peas, stuffing and salad cream. Apparently, it's lovely (but we couldn't find anyone willing to try it). However, as soon as we got to the crisp combinations there were unseemly scuffles in the kitchen, with everyone pitching in a suggestion or three. Our very own food expert Craig Glenday expanded everyone's horizons with his patented Monster Munch Mulch, a tempting combination of white bread, corn snacks and a wee spread of butter (a bit like our Craig, in fact). When feeling especially adventurous, Craig has even been known to slip some tuna fish and a couple of cherry tomatoes between the slices. Nice. We all know that the nation is divided on the subject of Marmite - some of you love it and the rest of us would sooner lick the cat than come near you - but cl-tollysmum has created a new take on sweet and (extremely) sour with her marmalade and Marmite sandwich. We don't recommend eating it before a first date. Bananas featured heavily in many of your suggestions, especially those involving the kitchen-killing combination of banana and cheese and a toasted sandwich maker (we can hear the sound of scraping from here). Our favourite - when we finally managed to pull it off the toaster - came from paulinemorgan, who suggested the cheese, tomato and banana toasty, a complete two-course meal on one hot and sticky plate. And finally, just when we thought it was safe to go back into the kitchen, we discovered a truly disturbing contribution. Anyone who wonders what boys are really made of need look no further than the suggestion sent in by cl-redriva. This far from tempting combination was created by her (ex-) boyfriend and consists of cold ham, roast beef, strawberry jam, lemon curd and Marmite. We think it sounds like the kind of thing that some boys would eat for a bet, but then we all know that some boys will do anything for a bet. Pizza, anyone?
