Light reflectors

With this activity, children will see how light reacts to different surfaces and, in turn, reflects onto the wall. Light reflectors are even more exciting when a group of children shine their reflectors at the same time.

What this activity will develop:
Science and art skills

What you'll need:

  • Black cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Aluminium foil
  • Glue

Setting up:

  1. Cut the black cardboard into small squares.
  2. Using the aluminium foil, cut shapes that will make interesting patterns.
  3. Glue the foil shapes onto the cardboard squares.

What to do:

  1. Hold a card so that it is facing the sun (but don't look directly at sunlight) or a bright light bulb.
  2. Move the card so that the light reflects off the foil shapes, making patterns on a wall. Jiggle the card to make the patterns move.
  3. Hold a card in each hand, making the patterns combine and change as the cards move.
  4. Have a group of people hold cards to fill a wall with a pattern collage.
