Designed for children who are learning to read, this charades game encourages children to learn vowel sounds and to associate those sounds with a variety of words. This game also gives children who are lagging behind a chance to learn from their peers.

What this activity will develop:
Reading, thinking and language skills

What you'll need:

• Thick paper
• Marker or pen
• Safety pins

What to do:

1. Print each of the short (for example cat, egg, ink, hot, hut) and long vowel (for example, apron, Egypt, icicle, bingo usual) sounds on a separate sheet of paper.
2. The players sit in a circle and one person is chosen to begin the game. Pin one of the vowel cards on that person's back without letting the person see the card.
3. The player chosen turns around so that everyone can see the vowel sound.
4. The players in the circle think up words that have that vowel sound. The player in the centre calls on the people in the circle to act out their words.
5. The player in the middle tries to guess the word and the vowel sound.
6. If the guess is correct, the player who acted out the last word takes a turn in the centre.
