There's nothing better than finding a character to admire in a good read. iVillagers reveal their favourites. 'One character I admire greatly is Eleanor Arroway from the novel Contact by Carl Sagan. When I was younger I wanted to be an astronomer. Eleanor is so confident in her abilities and in her beliefs. She is not afraid to fight for what she knows is right. She is a strong woman and I was so impressed that a man could develop this character so convincingly. I would love for Eleanor to come alive and I would love to meet her. I would love to listen to the stars with her and learn from her.' 'My favourite book character is Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. I read that book as a young girl and it changed my life. I was horrified by the injustice in the book, not just the trial and death of an innocent man but also the injustice of Boo's life. Atticus was great, calm but passionate and a brilliant father figure. I was also amazed and excited when I realised the narrator was a young girl and not a boy as in most books I had read and she called her father by his first name. Today I am an attorney for legal aid. I don't think I would be where I am today if I had missed this jewel of a novel as a child.' 'I was trying to come up with a sophisticated, literary answer for this question, but instead I can't forget my long-time heroine, Scarlett O'Hara from Gone with the Wind. I admire her for many reasons. She was strong, independent, she persevered and never cared what others thought of her. I think she taught me you could be all those things and feminine as hell.' 'I admire P.D. James' detective Cordelia Gray. She makes her way through a man's world, and she does it using her brain and her heart.' 'Kinsey Millhone, the sleuth from Sue Grafton's mysteries. I would love to chat with her, as the fictional life she leads is exactly what I would like to have done.' 'I think that I would like to be like Jo March from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. She was strong, daring, educated. I think reading LW when I was around nine really affected me. I might ask if she ever got over Laurie, the boy next door.'
