Take advice from the iVillage community on how to prevent or minimise wrinkles.
What's the best beauty routine for wrinkle prevention?
Try different product ranges and see which one suits you best. Always take you makeup off before you go to bed and get an eye cream/gel to help minimise the wrinkles around your eyes. Invest in a cream or balm for your lips, especially if you smoke, because as you get older your mouth will develop wrinkles too. Use a good body moisturiser to help firm the skin and stop it from drying out too much.

When should I start using anti-wrinkle creams?
Many people start using anti-wrinkle creams in their late 30s or 40s. Dry skin ages quicker than oily skin and many anti-wrinkle creams are too heavy for younger skin, so it depends on your age and skin type. Always wear a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection to prevent premature ageing.

Can laser treatment help wrinkles?
I have assisted Dermatologists in treating patients undergoing resurfacing procedures for wrinkles and acne scarring, using a Co2 Laser. This is the most aggressive but the most successful laser for this type of treatment. Contact your nearest Laser Care Centre and ask for a dermatologist that is very experienced in this particular procedure. The dermatologists that aren't specialists may only 'pass' over the skin surface a couple of times with a low input laser, which results in a superficial treatment that may not be deep enough.

Do tanning booths really cause wrinkles?
The risks associated with tanning booths include various forms of cancer, pre-maturing ageing and wrinkles. It's far healthier to use a self-tanning product such as St. Tropez Whipped Bronze Mousse. You'll have the look you want and stay healthy too.

Should I be using anti ageing day cream with Sun Protection Factor?
What you should be using is a moisturiser that contains SPF. It is the sun's UVA rays. (which penetrate the deepest layers of the skin, the dermis) which causes premature ageing UVA can cause long-term damage, which may not become noticeable until you get much older. The UVA rays can also destroy the skin's collagen cells, which makes it more difficult for the skin to renew itself. Collagen cells diminish naturally with age anyway, but the sun accelerates this process.

How do I protect my skin from wrinkles when on holiday?
Sun exposure is bad for the skin - don't go outside the door with anything less than a factor 20 sunscreen on your face, even if you want a tan - its not worth the wrinkles later in life. Ensure too, that you have at least factor 15 on your body.

Can facial exercises prevent wrinkles?
I used to do facial exercises until I heard that they were the worst possible things you could do to prevent wrinkles because they take away the elasticity in the face. Younger skin is quite taut, like an elastic band before you stretch it, so if you keep on stretching the `elastic band', it looses its elasticity and becomes saggy. I stopped doing these facial exercises straight away. Why do people go for facelifts? Because they have no elasticity whatsoever left in their face.
