Stains are caused by poor cleaning down before painting. The wall should always be washed with sugar soap. You can also treat stains caused by damp this way, provided the cause of the problem has been fixed.

Stain blocker or oil-based undercoat, paintbrushes, topcoat

| Clean the area thoroughly with sugar soap, then allow the surface to dry completely. |
Apply stain blocker or oil-based undercoat over the stain. |
Allow the stain blocker or undercoat to dry, then re-coat with spare topcoat. |
