It's been an amazing summer, and who says it has to be over so soon? Raise a glass to the last dregs of summer with the latest of all things bright and boozy
Gaymer's Orchard Reserve cider
Cider has made a comeback this summer, and now you don't have to be a ladette to enjoy a good-sized glass of the West Country fare on a warm summer's day. Gaymer Cider Company aim for the slightly more discerning cider drinker with their range of special reserves presented in a wine-style bottle. We like the Stonesbrook Orchard variety - delicately sparkling with light citrus flavours and a hint of barley in the aftertaste. It's a nice alternative to beer and good on its own or with light food. But don't forget the golden rule - keep it well-chilled. The Orchard Reserve range is priced at around £2.49 and available at Morrisons and Booths supermarkets.
Gallo Family Vineyards
Everyone knows the Ernest and Julio Gallo brand of wines. The trusted Californian product has been around for 73 years and in recognition of the winery's family legacy they are aptly renaming themselves 'Gallo Family Vineyards' - which effectively means more colourful labels with bigger type. In celebration, we cracked open a bottle of the 2004 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon. This medium-bodied, softly spiced red is a nice accompaniment to roast lamb or other red meats. The Gallo Family Vineyards range is available in Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Somerfield, priced from £3.99 to £6.49.
Quinn's fruit drink
The idea of fermenting grapes for wine or fermenting apples for cider has been around for thousands of years, and now Quinn's present their new alcoholic fruit beverage made from fermented fruit (although which fruits we're not absolutely sure) and blended with pressed fruit. This makes for a slightly more grown-up drinking experience compared to their pre-mixed vodka and fruit juice alcopop cousins - with more muted colours and subtler flavours, the alcohol flavour is still barely detectable. Quinn's comes in three blended pressed fruit flavours: Raspberry and Blueberry, Mango and Passion Fruit and Orange and Tropical Fruit, and can be found at supermarkets, off-licences and bars nationwide priced from £1.50 to £2.75.
The Design Mix
If your budget doesn't quite stretch to the swankiest bars in the country, or indeed the world, you can read all about them in this book instead. Immerse yourself in a world where glass straws, £7,000 membership fees and egg-shaped loo cubicles are all part of the elite cocktail drinking experience. Keep this book on your coffee table to dip in and out of whenever you're in the mood for a bit of glamour and delectability. You can find The Design Mix at Amazon.co.uk and most book retail outlets at around £14.99.
Magnum cocktails
Magnum's ice cream have become part of the summer-ritual-on-a-stick. Now the company wants to fill your glass as well. An intriguing idea, so we tried out their Magnum Classic Cocktail recipe which involves blending a Magnum Classic with Baileys and vanilla vodka. The result is a rich dessert-style drink - too much of which might leave you feeling a bit over-indulged or very drunk as the suggested alcohol content is rather high. But served in small quantities in a shot glass it would be a decadent way to round off a meal. And the recipes give us ideas for experimenting with different styles of Magnums - try blending with crushed ice, and serve with red berries for an extremely indulgent summer treat. Also, try the Magnum Mint Cocktail for a cool summer refreshment. The Magnum ice cream range is available at most convenience stores at around £1.10
