When the issue of plastic surgery arises, today's A-List stars fall into three very distinct camps
Some would never dream of it, some swear by it and others could be described as borderline cases. We spoke to a selection of celebs to discover which side of the cosmetic surgery debate they fall on.
The Nay sayers
Angelica Huston, 56
'This great fear of laugh lines and wrinkles and getting old is really unnatural. It happens to the best of us - what are we going to do? It's a matter of whether you want to go to war with that and have surgery. Ultimately it's a slippery slope. I think you wind up looking like a thing rather than a younger version of yourself. I think you have to make peace with what you have and keep it all in order. Women here in LA are having it done in their thirties, which is ridiculous.'
Kim Cattrall, 50
'I don't think the answer is plastic surgery. I see women my age, like Melanie Griffith, who have had surgery but I don't want to look at myself and see Joker from Batman staring back.'
Sharon Stone, 49
'I haven't had plastic surgery and I wouldn't have it in the future. It's just not my thing. I'm not afraid of ageing. I stopped being afraid of life a long time ago.'
Jamie Lee Curtis, 48
'These poor, poor women - and men! They already look odd and it is insane what people are doing to themselves now. I'm not saying it's terrible to have a little subtle something done - that's between them and their plastic surgeon. But now it's this total insanity. It's happening to kids and younger people and Botox is now all the rage and we now have these plastic surgery makeover shows on TV, and no one talks about what happens to you inside when you do all these procedures.'
Julianne Moore, 46
'I don't understand how an immovable face is a beautiful face - I don't think it is. I'm only human and I did think for a while that maybe I should get boobs, but then I rejected the idea because it seemed like major surgery. You want to hold people to standards that are human and attainable and naturally beautiful, rather than thinking we have to be something that we're not. I don't think the proliferation of plastic surgery shows and stuff helps anything.'
Halle Berry, 40
'I do think we've become obsessed with beauty and the fountain of youth and, personally, I'm really saddened by the way women mutilate their faces today in search of that. I see women in their thirties getting plastic surgery, pulling this up, tucking that back. It's a slippery slope - once you start to pull one thing one way, then you think, "Oh my God, I've got to do the other side." It's really insane, and I feel sad about what society is doing to women.'
Nicole Kidman, 40
'I would love to have boobs and a butt like Jennifer Lopez but I'm not having surgery so there it is.'
Cate Blanchett, 38
'I see someone's face, someone's body who has had children, and I think they're the songlines of your experience. Why would you want to eradicate that? It's not just women on film; 18-year-old girls feel pressure to do preventative injecting. I look at people entombing themselves and you think, "Just live your life." Death is not going to be any easier just because your face can't move."'
Kate Winslet, 31
'It is odd that people have done so much to themselves, the men as much as the women, that they don't even look like themselves anymore. Hollywood is the facelift capital of the world. I'm not going to name names but I can always tell. I remember my first Oscar ceremony, spotting all the surgery on some famous faces. I've thought of it, I must admit, but I think my husband might leave me if I had any procedures done, so I have no plans to change anything.'
The nip/tuck regulars
Joan Rivers, 74
'You paint the house and maintain the car, right? Well, I go to my surgeon every six months and ask for touch-ups.'
Demi Moore, 44
'I have no problem with enhancing one's look or fixing something that's changed. I don't see me getting oodles of stuff done but for some things it's a Godsend. I say everything in moderation. After three kids, gravity and nature takes its toll and everything heads south so it's an option.'
Carmen Electra, 35
'When I get older I'd definitely consider getting a few nips and tucks. Obviously I considered it for my breasts as I got implants. But the truth is I sometimes wish now I'd never done it because I had nice boobs before. They were small but they were nice.'
Fergie, 32
'I haven't had any surgery but I would consider a nip and a tuck. I've been sun-tanning forever and damaging my skin. I would be open to Botox.'
Liv Tyler, 30
'I'm definitely going to have some, I'm sure. Especially when you see what happens to your body after you have a baby. I have to make a living.'
Scarlett Johansson, 22
'I definitely believe in plastic surgery. I don't want to be an old hag. There's no fun in that.'
The undecideds
Diane Keaton, 61
'Never say never. I'll tell you why: I remember when I was a kid, I would say, "I will never have sex before I marry. Never." All those things I said I would never do, I always did. So I know I can't say it because I know that it is the curse. I know I'll just go right out there and say, "Let's just yank this off and give me some Botox, right. Fill it all up." I'd rather not; I'd rather remain authentic. But you never know.'
Joely Richardson, 42
'I'm very mixed about it, very on the fence. When people say, "No, I would never have cosmetic surgery on point of principle", I say, "How do you know? How do you know how you might feel in 20 years time?"'
Kylie Minogue, 39
'I don't have any strong opinions about people going under the knife. If they want to, then good luck to them - I'll cross that bridge later. But I'm just like any girl and I have the same anxieties and issues. Who doesn't? When I go and watch the rushes of a new video, I dread it because I'm worried how I'm going to look.'
Jennifer Aniston, 38
'I think whatever floats your boat. You've gotta do what you've gotta do.'
Jennifer Lopez, 37
'I don't do it, but I don't want to judge because I don't know how I'll feel when I'm 40 or 50 and if that is something I would do. I know that getting older is tough; I don't want to judge because I'm not there yet. But anything in excess is not good. If somebody is cutting up their face and their body over and over again, it's got to be something inside that they're not dealing with, so obviously deal with that first before you go under the knife.'
Penelope Cruz, 33
'I'm not against it totally. If someone really wants to do it for themselves, good for them, but it's not healthy the way people are so unhappy with the way they look. Personally I don't think I would ever have Botox injections or have plastic surgery, but maybe there will be other more natural things you can do when I am older so who knows?'
Reese Witherspoon, 31
'What's my take on it? It seems like a very lucrative profession! I don't have any concerns about it yet. Ask me in a few more years - I'm sure I'll be very knowledgeable!'
Kirsten Dunst, 25
'I don't judge people who get plastic surgery. I'm 25 right now so I don't see that in my near future but I don't know.'
