On-trend make-up for summer

This season, the best beauty trends give you artistic licence to enhance your best features. Whether you prefer to play up your skin, eyes or lips, a few expert tips and tricks will help you achieve a look that's truly on trend

The Loud Mouth

2True Cheek Lip TintIn contrast to previous summers' nude looks, this season mouths are painted in eye-catching, pout-popping colour. Whether you prefer sassy orange-red or sophisticated deep scarlet, this is a look that will definitely get you noticed!

'Bold lips are a hot trend this season,' says Bourjois make-up artist Cassie Lomas. 'Go for non-shiny formulas for an ultra-modern look.' We like the new breed of lip stains such as Bourjois Rouge Hi Tech Liquid Liptint in Cyber Cassis (fuschia pink), £7.25, and 2True Cheek 'n' Lip Tint, £1.95 (available from Superdrug).

For a flawless result, make sure your lips are smooth and even. This will also help your lip colour to go the distance. 'Prep lips first with a little petroleum jelly and scrub lips gently with a toothbrush to gently slough away any dry skin. There is no need to use a lip-liner with this look,' says Cassie.

For a lasting, matte finish, dust lips with loose powder before applying your lip colour, and keep eye make-up understated with defined brows or a flick of black liquid liner such as 17's Liquid Eye Liner, £3.49.

The Creamy Complexion

foundation Vita LiberataThis summer, skin is soft, matte and flawless, with an 'airbrushed' finish, so concentrate on achieving a killer complexion with concealer, matte foundation and translucent powder.

For this look, blusher should be left in your make-up bag, while lips and eyes are simply enhanced with a sheer wash of colour and brown mascara. 'Use an oil-free moisturiser to prep the skin beforehand,' says Cassie. 'Then apply a mattifying foundation and follow with a little powder applied to the T-zone for a shine-free, long-lasting result.'

We like Vita Liberata Me But Better Compact Matte Foundation, £19.50 (www.vitaliberata.com) and Clinique Superfit Makeup, £18.50 (from 29th August).

Don't forget to use a good concealer such as Benefit Bo-oing Industrial Strength Concealer, £15.50, to minimise any imperfections or under-eye circles, and for oil control throughout the day, carry facial blotting papers such as Bourjois Anti-Shine Face Blotters, £4.50, or Benefit Get Even Face Powder, £21.50, in your bag.

The Upbeat Eye

Dazzle Dust 90It's time to swap those boring beige and taupe eye-shadows for something livelier this season! The summer palette ranges from canary yellow to aquamarine blue and mint green which will make your eyes a real focus. We love Barry M Dazzle Dust in Pearly Mauve, £4.50, an electric purple, and 2True True Colour Eyeshadow in No.14, £1.95, a vivid peacock blue.

However, it's essential to deploy a few expert tricks to make the most of the shimmery textures and to avoid looking like you've tried too hard. 'Confine bright eye-shadows to eyelids only or try smudging a soft, creamy eye pencil like Bourjois Metalisse Eyeliner Pencil, £4.25, close to the lashes for extra drama,' says Cassie.

Finish the look with a lash-lengthening mascara such as 17 Ultimate Length Mascara, £4.75, for a skinny, spidery result. Alternatively, if you would like to use a coloured mascara, use a shade to contrast with your eye shadow. Finally, contour cheeks with a sweep of peach or tawny blush; we love Clinique Blushwear Cream Stick in Tawny, £18 (from 1st August).

The Gradual Glow

Bourjois Illuminating GelA fresh-faced, 'barely there' glow is perhaps this season's prettiest beauty trend, and models at Donna Karan and Michael Kors were spied sporting healthy, sun-kissed colour that looked so much more modern than the deep, 'Donnatella' tans of seasons past.

However, you need to choose your bronzing product carefully to be truly on trend. Cassie says: 'For a natural, sun-kissed glow, use a little bronzing gel on bare skin; apply it with a foundation brush or cotton wool pad by dabbing onto the skin where the sun naturally hits (forehead, temples, cheeks and nose/chin) for a subtle finish. If you would like a little more coverage, then add a drop to your foundation.'

We love Bourjois Illuminating Gel, £6.95, and Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Luminous Liquid Bronzer, £20. If you prefer to use bronzing powder, use it sparingly, just enough on the contours of the face to define the cheekbones and leave your skin looking fresh and healthy.

Keep the rest of your make-up simple, with a nude or flesh-toned lip gloss such as Bobbi Brown Glitter Lip Gloss in Buff, £13, groomed eyebrows and long, lush lashes.
