Binge drinking, pub happy hours and cheap supermarket booze are increasingly causing alcohol-related disorder, putting an enormous strain on police resources. So does Britain have a drink problem?

A newly-published report has claimed the biggest problem faced by police forces today is violence and disorder caused by excessive drinking.

But the problem is not confined to unruly youngsters out on the town. A campaign launched earlier this year targeted middle aged women who drink excessively at home without recognising they have a problem.

Among the health concerns raised in the campaign was that of breast cancer, with Cancer Research claiming alcohol causes around 2,000 cases of the disease each year.

So with excessive alcohol consumption seemingly affecting every section of society, is it the case that Britain has a major drink problem?

Is it a national trait? Why don't other countries suffer in the same way? Maybe you think there isn't a problem and it's merely another case of sensationalist headline writing?
