Ten ways to get promoted

Securing the job is just the first step. Find out how to move up at work

Clearly, promotion means more than knuckling down, hoping someone will notice your untapped potential. While your teachers at school endeavoured to bring you out of your shell and coerce you into celebrating your achievements, expecting your employer to do the same is unrealistic.

How to move up

1. Feel assured and know every aspect of the position you have now.

2. Be aware of the jobs which are peripheral to yours. Having knowledge of these will show your interest in and commitment to the company.

3. Find out everything you can about the promotion that you are seeking.

4. Cultivate work relationships with prospective colleagues in the department you hope to join.

5. Be seen to be willing to take on extra tasks, if asked.

6. Remember, enthusiasm for the job is infectious, and a smile and a pleasant attitude can work wonders.

7. Be punctual, smart and reliable.

8. If you really want to succeed don't be a clock watcher.

9. Use all exhibition, conferencing and external meetings as an opportunity to shine and show your personality.

10. Take all training opportunities offered. And also try to seek some out.
