Be breast aware

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, affecting about 1 in 9 women at some point in their life. But checking yourself out once a month will help you recognise what's normal and what isn't. It should only take about 5 minutes - and it could save your life; early diagnosis and prompt treatment significantly increases the chances of survival for breast cancer sufferers.

Make sure you check your breasts at least a week after your period. If you are unsure ask your doctor how, or pick up a leaflet at the surgery. Become familiar with the routine and you'll learn what to expect.

If you do find a suspicious lump don't panic: only around 20 per cent of breast lumps are cancer but you should still see your doctor as soon as possible.
