Making connections

This word game is perfect for those times with the family when everyone's looking for something to do. It requires little setting up - just have paper, pencils and some creative thought on hand.

What this activity will develop:
Vocabulary and thinking skills

What you'll need:

  • Paper
  • Pencils

What to do:
Write down the three words in one of the examples below. Help the children work out what the three words have in common. Then write down the rest of the examples and have children try to find the connection that links each new trio of words. If you're playing with a group of children, have the children work in teams to create their own word connections. Have teams present their three words to each other. Can the other team discover the connection?

Examples:
back, saw, sea (horse)
board, hole, house (key)
rain, over, hanger (coat)
new, blue, shine (moon)
club, tree, sit (house)
