Preventing dry hair

If you're prone to dry hair, try incorporating these quick and easy tips into your hair care routine

Dry hair is caused by heat and the elements, so the first step is prevention: Avoid using overly hot dryers and heat-styling implements and wear a hat or scarf if you're going to be exposed to sun or wind for long periods (at the beach or skiing, for instance). Don't wash your hair every day - unless you have an oily scalp. Shampoo about two or three times a week - often enough to remove dirt and buildup.

When you wash your hair, use shampoos and conditioners that contain humectants. Humectants are ingredients in shampoo and conditioners, such as glycerin and panthenol, which help bind water to the hair to reduce dryness. Leave the conditioner on your hair as long as possible. Do a deep-conditioning treatment about once a week.
