| Help and Tips for Using the iVillage Audio Video Player

iVillage Audio Video is streaming multimedia (audio and video) programming. Streaming means that the audio and video clips play automatically once you click on them so you don't have to wait to download the whole clip before watching or listening to it. The iVillage Audio Video Player is a pop-up window that plays iVillage Audio Video. Within our player you'll also find related features, search capabilities and more. Audio Video Player Icons You will notice audio and video icons throughout the News and Entertainment channel. For instance, you may find audio or video icons on your in an article you are reading. Just click on the icon or the link next to it to watch or listen to an audio video clip.
What You Need to Watch and Listen to iVillage Audio Video In order to watch or listen to an iVillage Audio Video clip, you'll need to have the right computer system requirements and streaming software.

Streaming Software To watch and listen to iVillage Audio Video, you'll need RealPlayer and/or Windows Audio Video Player. Below are links to download (including directions to install) the free players that the iVillage Audio Video Player supports. We recommend downloading and installing both of the free players and choosing the software you like best. Directions for Downloading RealPlayer and Windows Media Player:
RealPlayer When you click on the link, you'll be asked to fill out a form with your name, email address and some answers to questions about your computer. Fill out the form and click the "Download FREE RealPlayer 8 Basic Beta" button. (Be sure to read the privacy policy for your protection.) Next, you'll be asked to pick the download option you want. The "RealPlayer Basic Standalone" is the minimum you'll need to watch Real audio videoon iVillage. Now you need to select a geographic location to download from. Choose a location close to you to make download time faster. A "File Download" window will appear and ask you if you want to "Save This Program to Disk" or "Run It from Its Current Location." Choose to save this program to disk and hit "OK." A "Save As" window will appear and ask you where you want to save the program. Choose to save the file to your desktop then click "Save." Be patient while RealPlayer downloads -- it will take about 10 to 15 minutes. Once it finishes downloading, you're ready to install RealPlayer. First, close any other programs you are running on your computer. Now you should see the RealPlayer icon on your desktop. It's called "rp8-setup.exe". Double-click that icon. The set-up program is straightforward -- it includes terms and conditions that you must agree to. You will also be asked where on your computer you want to install RealPlayer (referred to as the "Destination Directory"). The default is in your Program Files folder. This is just fine, so press "OK." Now hit the "Finish" button and RealPlayer will be installed on your computer. After it is installed, restart your computer. Now you are ready to go back to the iVillage browser page to play audio videoclip. Windows Media Player If you don't have Windows, you can download it now for free. Next, choose the player you want to download based on what system you have. For example, if you have Windows 95, you would choose the 6.4 version of Windows Media. (Note: Windows Media Player 6.4 is included in Microsoft® Windows® 2000. You do not need to download it. Windows Media Player 7 should NOT be installed on computers running Microsoft® Windows® 95 or Microsoft® Windows NT 4.0!) After you choose the appropriate player and correct language, click on the button that says, "Download Now." The first time you open the iVillage Audio Video Player you will be asked to select yourpreferences. Once you set your preferences, you will not be asked to set them again. The Preferences tab allows us to play the appropriate audio videofor your connection speed with your preferred streaming software. How to Select Your Preferences Steps
Depending on the speed of your connection to the Internet, the iVillage Audio Video Player will play the appropriate audio video optimised for your connection speed. The higher the speed of your connection, the bigger and better your video will play.

Tip: Improving your Audio/Video Playback Within the preferences tab set your connection speed less than what it is currently set at. For example, if you have a 56k modem and have 56k modem set in your connection speed but are experiencing poor audio video playback, set your connection speed to 28k/33k modem and hit save. You should notice that the audio videoclip plays more consistently.

Once your preferences are set, the next time you click on an iVillage Audio Video link the clip will automatically begin to play. Once the clip is playing, you are able to control the video or audio clip itself. Depending on your preferred streaming software you set in the preferences tab, there are different controls the software makes available to you. RealPlayer If the file does not play automatically, click on the play button to initiate the playing of your selected clip. At any time while the file is playing, you can click on the pause button. This will stop the video in its current position. To continue playing, click the play button to un-pause the video.
Stop To play the video again, hit play and this will start the video over from the beginning after a short period of buffering.
Volume Using your mouse, move the slider to the right to increase the volume or to the left to decrease the volume. You can mute the audio or video clip at any time by hitting the mute button. Clicking on this button will cut the volume but allow the clip to continue playing. If you want to hear the clip after pressing mute, simply click the mute button again.

Steps With your mouse, select the title of the media clip you would like to play. Let go of your mouse once the title is selected and the clip will automatically start to play.
How to Use the Buy Related Products Feature Click on the "Buy Related Products" button and a new browser window will open with the related product available for your purchase. Follow the instructions on that page to buy the item.
How to Use the Related Features To view one of the Related Features, click on the link you desire (you may want to pause or stop the video before clicking). A new browser window will open and go to the respective link. Your iVillage Audio Video Player will still be open and you can access it by closing the new browser window. How to use the Search feature The search function is located in the Info tab under the Related Features on the bottom right side of the iVillage Audio Video Player. This is a great tool for finding out additional information you may be seeking. The words you see already in the search box have been placed there for your convenience. These words have been hand picked by our editors to relate to the media clip that is currently playing. However, please feel free to type in any subject that you are interested in researching. You may want to pause or stop the media clip before using the search function. Steps Enter words that best describe what you are seeking, or you can use the preexisting choices. For best results, try to be as specific as possible, and don't use commas or dashes. Select where you want to do your search: on the iVillage the entire network, certain channels or on the WWW. If you want to watch or listen to an audio video clip while you are at work, try plugging headphones into your computer or your computer speakers so you don't bother your colleagues. Most computers have a headphone jack in the back of the computer. Laptops usually have a headphone jack on the side. Your computer speakers also may have a headphone jack in the front of one of the speakers. Enjoy! |
