| Coeliac: more than a wheat allergy
You may have heard of gluten intolerance, that is a reaction to the protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. This intolerance is so common these days that many people have had to review their eating habits and change their lifestyles. But it can also lead to a condition called coeliac disease, which now affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK (Coeliac UK). Still a relatively unknown food intolerance, coeliac (pronounced seeliak) is a genetic condition that can be identified by a simple blood test and treated with a gluten-free diet. As well as causing a range of symptoms - tiredness, anaemia and vomiting - it can lead to more serious long-term conditions like gut cancer and osteoporosis if left untreated.
