Why should you join in?
The UK's 220-plus local hospices are for people who have life-threatening illnesses. Hospice care is based on the simple idea - that the person is more than the illness. Each of us - sick or well - has unique physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. Hospices try to respond to these needs in ways which place the highest value on respect, choice and empowerment.
Hospice care is provided for adults and children in a number of places - at home, in day centres, on specialist hospital wards as well as in 'a hospice'. All this care is provided free of charge and is only possible because of the commitment and support of local people. On average local adult charitable hospices receive less that 30% of their income from the NHS - around 5% for children's hospices leaving them to raise nearly £300 million a year. This makes local charitable hospices the biggest fundraising cause in the UK.
Last year hospices cared for nearly 250,000 people. Ninety-five per cent of adult hospice admissions are for cancer-related conditions but hospices also care for people with a variety of other non-curable illnesses such as HIV/Aids, Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson's disease and rare genetic diseases.
How does the Wine at 9 event help?
Wine at 9 will help hospices to raise vital funds and could be used to pay for:
- The cost of a nurse
- Counselling and bereavement services
- Hospice care provided in the home
- Complementary therapies, such as massage and aromatherapy
- Capital items for the hospice itself such as beds and equipment
