10 of the hottest On-Screen Couples

brad and angelinaThroughout movie history sexual chemistry has been such that the screen has sizzled whenever the right two stars are cast together. The most recent examples are, of course, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the smash hit movie, Mr And Mrs Smith. Here we take a walk through film history and take a look at some of the hottest on-screen couples that have set our cinemas on fire!

1. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca (1943) created a classic romantic duo. Bogart plays former soldier of fortune Rick Blaine and Bergman plays Ilsa Lund, a mysterious woman from his past who needs him her husband escape the Nazis. She's still the love of his life, and the bittersweet chemistry between them is beautifully illustrated in the song 'As Time Goes By'.

2. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn were the perfect example of life mirroring art as their on screen partnership matched their off screen relationship, which lasted 27 years until Tracy's death in 1967. They made nine movies together - their first screen partnership was in Woman of the Year (1942) and the last was Guess Who?s Coming to Dinner (1967).

3. Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh carved their place in film history with their portrayal of the turbulent duo; the roguish Rhett Butler and Southern minx Scarlett O'Hara in the epic romance, Gone With The Wind (1939). One of the classic scenes is when Rhett sweeps Scarlett off her feet and carries her upstairs to the bedroom, a sequence which, for its time, was daring indeed.

4. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor's real life romance was as tempestuous and intriguing as any of the great love affairs that they acted out on the screen. There was no disguising the attraction between the two stars in the Oscar® winning Cleopatra (1963) when the on screen romance between Taylor's Cleopatra and Burton's Mark Anthony blossomed into an affair that grabbed headlines throughout the world.

5. Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck were exquisitely paired in Roman Holiday (1953); a sweet and utterly captivating fairy-tale romance, set in Rome. Often described as Cinderella in reverse, Hepburn played a runaway princess who falls for Peck's character, Joe Bradley, an American reporter in the Italian capital covering the royal tour.

6. Woody Allen and Diane Keaton brought wit into screen romance in Annie Hall. Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) is a chatty neurotic with his sights set on Annie Hall (Diane Keaton), an unconfident singer who dresses in an eye-catching array of men's baggy clothes.

7. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan revived old fashioned romance in Sleepless in Seattle (1993) when their characters finally get together on top of the Empire State building (just like in the golden oldie, An Affair to Remember starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr).

8. Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz in There's Something About Mary (1998) provided some of the most hilarious moments of any romantic comedy - and looked like they genuinely enjoyed doing it too!

9. George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez in Out Of Sight (1998) were the first screen couple to get locked in the boot of a car together and make it both funny and sexy! Clooney as bank robber Jack Foley, and J.Lo as Federal Marshall Karen Sisco sparked off so much chemistry together that one critic even compared them favourably with Bogart and Bacall!

10. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are so good in Mr and Mrs Smith (2005), a film about a troubled married couple who are unaware that they both live secret lives as sophisticated assassins, that you can't imagine any other stars tackling the roles with as much on-screen electricity.
