Spruce up your spring make-up

Ditch the wintry whiteness and burst into the new season with pretty shades of pink

Get Glowing
The time has come to reverse the damaging effects of winter. Make your skin the perfect canvas for make-up and get your glow back in just a few easy steps.

The first step for lacklustre skin is a good old scrub. Dead surface cells absorb light rather than reflecting it and this will make you look dull and grey. Clinique's latest product, The 15 Minute Facial (£25) does the job of shifting the debris without the use of scratchy granules and harsh acids. Apply a generous layer of the cream and the dirt will simply melt away.

The next priority is to banish those dark circles and puffy eyes. Invest in the beauty industry's new wonder cream, Hylexin. For £95 you get a teeny-tiny tube of cream which is hailed as the best weapon against dark circles and puffiness. On more of a modest budget? Head back to the Clinique counter and pick up some All About Eyes Concealer (£15). A multi-purpose product, this moisturises, de-puffs and lightens those tired eyes in one hit.

Pore Perfect
Get some colour back into your face with the help of a new light-diffusing foundation. This will provide the coverage you need as well as give your skin a healthy, dewy appearance.

Get the glow with the help of Becca's Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal. This product is part foundation, part moisturiser. It not only creates a flawless complexion but also protects against sun damage through the built-in SPF 15. Use on its own, or mix it with a drop of Giorgio Armani's critically acclaimed Luminous Silk Foundation and achieve the ultimate in pore perfection.

Eyes of blue
And green and yellow and gold! Colour was a big hit at the shows. Think of a shade and it was represented by at least one designer. But there was definitely one favourite that we saw time and time again - purple.

Purple is regal and sophisticated and everyone from supermodels to Hollywood princesses have been sporting varying degrees of lavender on their lids. This hue makes the eye look more open and feminine. And the best part? Purple complements every eye colour.

Avoid overkill, keep the rest of your make-up sheer, and pick up Chanel Irreelle Duo in Star Dust or MAC's eyeshadow in Creme de Violet. Apply with a fine brush or a cotton bud over the eyelids and around the rims of your eyes to create a soft, doe-eyed effect. Remember, a soft wash of lavender is enough. More shadow is not necessarily better.

Big lips
Winter weather might have left your lips cracking for attention - quite literally. It's vital that you tend to them before layering on the lipstick. Anyone wanting some serious therapy should pick up LipFusion XL. As its name suggests this is a lip volumising therapy which aims to give you the same result as a vial of Botox! Apply the product at night and wake up with noticeably fuller and hydrated lips.

For spring, designer Zac Posen sent out fresh-faced models wearing a hit of hot-pink lipstick. Take the look off the runway by applying a vivid matte lipstick. Skip the lip liner and instead, layer on the colour gently, applying with your finger to get a natural, vibrant look. Dior Addict Ultra-Shine Lipcolour in Shiniest Pomegranate is the ideal product.

Bubble-gum blush
Pair your pink lips with a doll-like blush. Nothing says spring like a bright wash of pink on cheeks. Lighter skins will glow with bubble-gum shades and darker skins will look luminous in richer tones.

To really heat up the cheeks use Pout Flush Blush in the aptly named Flushed Pink. If you have Asian or black skin, pick up the hot pink tones of Nars' Lokoum blush.

For anyone who wants to make less of a statement and needs a gentler introduction to blusher, you cannot go wrong with the new foolproof apricot shades like Givenchy's Prisme Again! In Pearly Satin. Sweep the brush over the powder and start applying on the apples of your cheeks to achieve a girly glow.

Flowing locks
Poker straight locks are still passe. Consign your GHD's to the cupboard and follow the lead of style mavens who are sporting healthy, natural looking locks that look carefully undone and soft. The beauty of this look is that it doesn't require a ton of products or the use of damaging heat-blasting tools.

The quick way to achieve it is to wash and go. After shampooing, spray in some Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray, wrap your hair in a bun and let it dry naturally. When dry simply undo the bun, massage in a light serum and hey presto - you have the hair Sienna wishes she hadn't chopped off for that film role.

Loose and carefree locks were joined by another key trend at the fashions shows - the ponytail. High and tight or low and loose, they were everywhere from Alberta Ferretti to Mariella Burani. Easy to achieve at home, they are girly, practical and chic.

After washing, blow-dry your hair smooth, banishing frizz, before gathering your hair into place with the help of a large paddle brush. Secure it in place with a hair band, getting a close to the base as you can. Copy the models at Sonia Rykiel and tie a black ribbon over the band. Don't be alarmed if any stray strands fall down - the look is meant to be sexy and soft rather than scrapped and harsh. Think Park Avenue Princess rather than Croydon Facelift.

With your hair in a sexy ponytail, your skin glowing and your pout ready for action you are well and truly on top of the trends for 2006. All you need now is that D&G broiderie anglaise dress, that new lilac Chloe Paddington and a healthy dose of sunshine.
