Hungry Hollywood

Hollywood's women are turning their bronzed backs on the pressures to stay stick-thin. More and more are realising that a little bit of what you fancy is the best way - tucking into burgers, cookies and pizza as they kick back and relax

Here are some leading ladies who are changing their relationship with food.

  • Gwyneth Paltrow:
'I drink a glass of wine with dinner, occasionally beer and also Guinness.'
  • Nicole Kidman:
'I'm tall and skinny with red hair - that makes me different!'
  • Charlize Theron:
'I love red meat - for breakfast it is steak and eggs.'
  • Felicity Huffman:
'After I had my children, I have to say I like my body a whole lot better'
  • Jennifer Aniston:
'I am a creature of habit. I like Italian food. Or Mexican food.'
  • Drew Barrymore:
'I'm like a corgi - I have very short legs.'
  • Reese Witherspooon:
'Ryan and I cook a big dinner together and stuff ourselves until we feel sick!'
  • Salma Hayek:
'I indulge in all my favourite foods - that is one of my greatest pleasures in life.'

Gwyneth Paltrow
Regular exercise and looking after two-year-old Apple help Gwynnie, 33, stay trim. However marriage to Chris Martin has made her much more laidback about her image and her diet. 'I like to exercise and be healthy,' she says, 'because it makes me feel good - not because I'm going to be the next Bond girl.'

Natural body shape: Tall and slim at 5'9"

Daily diet: Still enjoys plenty of wholegrains and pulses, and prefers food to be organic and in season. 'I like food that is fresh and unprocessed and I try not to eat a lot of sugar.'

Workout: Yoga and Pilates

Food outlook: Once famously fanatical about her macrobiotic diet, she has loosened up considerably. 'I don't have milk or butter because it's not good for anybody but I am a lot less strict than I was' she says. 'I used to have miso soup and oatmeal for breakfast. My diet was very regimented but now I eat what I want.' Her relaxed attitude even extends to enjoying the occasional tipple. 'I drink a glass of wine with dinner, occasionally beer and also Guinness.'

Top treat: Gwynnie likes a trip to the bakery as much as the rest of us. 'Once in a while I'll have chocolate cake,' she says. She also now scoffs wheat and cheese: 'If I'm out, I can't resist Parmesan cheese.'

Nicole Kidman
Willowy Nicole reached her height of 5'10" at just 13 years old, but at the age of 38 she has come to enjoy standing out from the crowd. 'There are so many short blondes, and I'm tall and skinny with red hair - that makes me different!'

Natural body shape: Long and lean

Daily diet: Nic loves salads, pineapple and seafoods. 'I eat lots of fish as it's full of nutrition. It is not unusual for me to have monkfish for breakfast, crab for lunch and salmon for dinner.'

Workout: Running or being pushed in the gym by her personal trainer

Food outlook: Nicole has a soft spot for doughnuts and was spotted scoffing a baked potato at a post-awards bash. She unwinds by putting together meals for herself and her two kids. 'Cooking relaxes me,' she says, 'it's the one thing I'm good at around the house.' She makes up for the occasional splurge by swapping some of her meals for healthy and nutritious vegetable smoothies.

Top treat: Chocolate cheesecake. To raise her weight of less than nine stone, she has been tucking into a slice of her mum's chocolate cheesecake recipe every day, to help boost her fat and energy levels - lucky thing.

Charlize Theron
30-year-old Charlize had to trim down for her role in Aeon Flux, losing a stone in a month by cutting out alcohol, starch and dinner. But she didn't enjoy the experience and prefers to be her natural size. 'It wasn't fun,' she says, 'something strange happens to your body - you just don't feel as strong.'

Natural body shape: Slim: 'I am usually around a size 10, which I love.'

Workout: Dancing; she trained as a ballet dancer. Gentle gym work.

Daily diet: She eats plenty of raw fruit and veg to gain the maximum vitamin and mineral benefits, but balances it with what she likes. 'I love red meat - for breakfast it is steak and eggs.'

Food outlook: Charlize is reassuringly well-adjusted, largely because of her background: 'South Africans love their food,' she says. 'I could live off potato chips! I'm very comfortable with my body. I love cheese, meat, pizza, fries... only now, I try to find a balance between what tastes good and what's good for me.'

Top treat: 'Being South African, my best meal would be a traditional braai - made on a wood fire with spicy sausages, juicy lamb chops, baked potatoes, salads and all the trimmings.'

Felicity Huffman
The Desperate Housewives star was both bulimic and anorexic in her teens and early 20s, throwing up six times a day and weighing just seven stone. `As an actress, I was never thin enough, never pretty enough,? she says. But now at the age of 43, she has accepted who she is. `I think I've always had a 40-year-old body and now that I'm actually there, I'm like: 'Hey, pretty good, huh?' I love my body now.''

Natural body shape: Toned and lithe

Workout: Jogging - she used to compete at a local level and still loves long-distance runs. She also enjoys tennis and cycling.

Daily diet: On set, the girls get plenty of veggies, fish and chicken from the catering van. Felicity has a balanced diet, for the sake of her family as well as her figure. `We eat well and healthily,? she says. `I insist on it.?

Food outlook: Meeting husband William H Macy turned her around, as did having a family. `After I had my children, I have to say I like my body a whole lot better. I can actually eat and say, 'yes, I'm a size 6 or size 8', and that's kind of hard to say for Hollywood, that's big.?

Top treat: The mum-of-two loves pizza and ice cream, as well as co-star Teri Hatcher's homemade cookies. 'Everyone loves when she brings in her baked goods and she does it pretty often, too.'

Jennifer Aniston
Jen, 37, has admitted she took dieting too far in the past, dangerously cutting out all carbohydrates. Once a fan of the Atkins regime, she has replaced fad diets with a simple mix of healthy eating - but still doesn't touch alcohol or coffee.

Natural body shape: Lean but feminine

Workout: Practising ancient martial art Budokon, which combines fighting skills, hatha yoga and medititation.

Daily diet: Combines carbs with chicken or fish and healthy fats like nuts or olive oil. Jen grills food instead of frying and tries to stick to small portions as well as plenty of salad.

Food outlook: Enjoying cosy meals with new beau Vince Vaughn has helped Jen get over her previously strict regime. 'Now I eat plenty,' she smiles. 'I eat anything I want within reason. I work out but I don't go crazy, I'm just healthy.' Her main beauty tip now is drinking lots and lots of water.

Top treat: 'I am a creature of habit. I like Italian food. Or Mexican food.' The former Friend also has a penchant for cheese, especially Pecorino cheese, which is made from sheep's milk.

Drew Barrymore
Drew only started exercising last year when she turned 30 but has a balanced approach to food. A terrible cook by her own admission, she loves eating out. 'I love all types of food: Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Italian.' Fun-loving Drew still enjoys a drink, especially red wine.

Natural body shape: Small and slim: 'I'm like a corgi - I have very short legs.'

Daily diet: She eats loads of organic fruit and veg, sticking to three meals a day.

Workout: Swimming, jogging, yoga, dancing... Drew isn't fussy about what gets her hot! 'It doesn't matter how you raise a sweat, so long as you have fun doing it,' she advises.

Food outlook: The child star of ET used to be a full vegetarian. 'I was living on carbs,' she says. 'Now I eat more protein. I don't eat a ton of meat but if my body needs some then I'll eat it.'

Top treat: Creamy pasta dishes. 'I think, 'I ran today, I can have the fettucine alfredo.' You heard me, cream and carbs! If I want that pasta, I'm gonna have it.' She also loves jelly.

Reese Witherspooon
The Southern belle and mum-of-two says she often finds it a chore to fit in enough exercise. Like many stars, the fear of having to wear a bikini in Legally Blonde made 29-year-old Reese trim down after giving birth to daughter Ava but she is now content as she is. She also puts the success if her marriage to actor Ryan Phillipe down to 'being able to cook a really good meal.'

Natural body shape: Petite but curvy

Workout: Walking her dogs, and a regular workout which she changes every now and then to avoid getting bored.

Daily diet: Reese enjoys healthy wholesome food like casseroles, but understands she can eat pretty much what she wants as long as she gets plenty of exercise.

Food outlook: A well-balanced Reese is keen her kids don't ever get hang-ups about food. She enjoys traditional American food and sees food as a very sociable experience. 'At Christmas, Ryan and I cook a big dinner together and stuff ourselves until we feel sick!' she says.

Top treat: Mashed potato and roast chicken. She also craves posh chocolates; 'My favourite chocolates are Touche - they're from Switzerland - the champagne truffles are the best.'

Salma Hayek
Gaining weight for a new role helped Salma feel more feminine. The 39-year-old piled on the pounds to play a fiery Mexican husband-hunter in Ask the Dust. 'I put on a little bit of weight,' she says. 'Actually I put a lot of weight on but it was okay. Once I got naked with all that weight, I said, 'You know what? It's okay.''

Natural body shape: Shapely curves

Daily diet: Small portions of a healthy mix of vegetables and chicken or fish, along with plenty of complex carbs such as brown rice.

Keeps fit by: Walking on the beach or cycling. Salma is not a big fan of gyms or working out. 'The concept of going into a room full of people who are sweating and inhaling their sweat while I'm painfully driving myself into exhaustion...I don't understand it.'

Food outlook: Originally told she would get more work if she lost weight, petite 5'2" Salma has since realised being curvy is sexy. She loves hot chocolate and Mexican dishes, as well as American Thanksgiving dinner. 'Basically I love food,' she laughs, 'and I indulge in all my favourite foods because that is one of my greatest pleasures in life.'

Top treat: Hamburgers - and lots of them. She also loves the occasional Marguerita.
