The Malmaison offers a great base from which to explore the buzzing city of Leeds. Peggy Nuttall sampled its delights
The building
A large, nicely laid out converted warehouse; this is a trendily styled place with lots of purple and black and white accents - very tasteful and modern.
The room
More purple, with lush fabrics creating a cosy, sensual, ambience. The giant king-size bed is to die for: great quality mattress and more pillows than you know what to do with. It was the best night's sleep I've had in a very long time.
The bathroom is simple and does the job, with nice toiletries and tastefully designed fittings.
Facilities include a large-screen TV and DVD player, CD player and the obligatory mini bar and tea making facilities.
Hotel facilities
A small gym with basic equipment (pilates mats and stretching bands available on request). Room service is available morning and evening. There is a DVD lending service with a modest selection.
The restaurant
A real highlight. Fantastic French-influenced cuisine, pleasant surroundings and a relaxed atmosphere. The menu changes regularly, based on seasonality. I had a wild mushroom linguine to start, followed by the seared scallops, a rather rich pairing in hindsight, but delicious dishes individually.
The waiter recommended I try the Feuilletine of Fresh Raspberries (layers of puff pastry, raspberries and cream) to finish, a good thing too as this delectable dessert still holds a lasting memory.
Despite the place being packed on a Saturday night, the service was efficient, friendly and attentive. Definitely worth a visit in its own right, but judging by its full capacity it's worth reserving a table to avoid disappointment.
The area
Conveniently located, walking distance away from restaurants, bars, shops and the train station in central Leeds.
The damage
The room rate is £140 per room, per night. There is a fixed price menu which is served until 7pm with two courses costing £10.95 or three for £12.95. The a la carte menu is served after that.
Verdict
Friendly and welcoming staff, great rooms and fantastic food. Highly recommended.
