If you'd like to open a current account you may be asked for:

Written proof of your name and address, like your passport, driving licence, or recent utility bill.

You'll have to fill out an application form. You can pick one up from the bank or building society, or often download them from the internet.

You may need some money to pay into the account. Just £1 is often enough.

Depending on the type of account, you may be asked for more information, like proof of income e.g. payslips or bank statements.

How much will it cost me?
Many current accounts are free as long as you don't go overdrawn, unless you choose a Packaged Account or a Premier Account.

Be careful not to go overdrawn without agreeing it first - that's when the charges start stacking up. Even if there's a fee for setting up and using an overdraft, it's still cheaper than going overdrawn without agreeing it first.
