Prison: Not for girls
Feeling a bit criminal, but don't want a prison sentence? Better make sure you're a mother.
Alice Thomson has argued in The Times that women who commit non-violent crimes shouldn't be imprisoned, as it's not fair on their children.
Apparently it's no big deal if fathers are sent to prison, as who really cares about them? They're basically just a hairy plant pot, standing in the corner and taking up space that could be filled with a nice lamp.
"The reason most people want their fellow citizens incarcerated is because they are a menace and a threat to society. That is why they don’t want rapists, paedophiles, burglars, muggers or anyone who threatens their peace of mind released early," she says.
So as long as you only want to commit fraud or break the arm of that annoying woman with the bubble perm in the school playground, that's ok. She probably deserved it. Plus you're a mother, so who cares?
Interesting that Thomson seems to know what 'most people' want - especially interesting given that the penal system doesn't seem to know what it's for - Does it provide punishment, redemption or isolation for the protection of civilians?
If crimes that don't threaten society's 'peace of mind' are so trivial that mothers shouldn't get a prison sentence, why should men?
