When you live with teenagers, sulks, silences and bad moods are all par for the course. But would you recognise the signs if something more serious was wrong? Statistics from the Mental Health Foundation indicate that one in five young people experience some kind of mental health problem at any one time.

1. Not taking any pleasure in life
2. Complaining that life has no meaning
3. Being prone to irrational panic attacks
4. Complaining of endless sleepless nights or not being able to get up in the morning
5. A loss of appetite, going without food
6. Being uninterested in other people's company
7. Experimenting with drugs or always drinking
8. Hearing voices or seeing things
9. Cutting their arms or other self-inflicted injuries
10. Always getting into trouble
