Reading with kids - tips for fathers
No comments
Reading with a child isn't just for mums, it's a father's responsibility too and it's just as important for their reading ability and development. Here's why...
Keeps dad involved
Reading is a fundamental skill for your child and making sure they start off on the best foot is crucial for their language development. From nursery rhymes to short stories this is where your child learns the basics.
So whether there's a grizzly bear or a boy named Biff, in order to understand and engage with your child you're going to need to know what they're reading and how they are learning.
Get reading
At an early age your child is incredibly influential. If you like something then more often than not they will too. The same applies with reading; if you're seen to enjoy reading then hopefully they will too.
Two's better than one
If mum thinks reading is enjoyable it will automatically spark interest with your child and they are more likely to give it some thought. But if mum and dad both think it's a fun part of everyday life, then your child is definitely going to think it's worth a look!
The more people that reinforce this message the more your child will accept reading as a fun and fundamental part of life.
And relax...
Most dads like to take the more adventurous role with their child, playing sports, tickle fights and wrestling matches. But when playtime is over play time is over dads need to show their kids how to calm back down.
Reading is a very calm, relaxing activity. If you as their dad can get them in fits of giggles and then calm them down and read a book, you're going to teach them a valuable lesson in how to relax.
