Staying safe

There are two vital rules to staying safe online – clear your cache and log out

If you are currently being abused and your abuser can access this computer, he may know that you’ve visited iVillage. Don’t let an abuser follow your activities online. Stay safe by following our ground rules.

History/cache file: if an abuser knows how to read your computer’s history or cache file (automatically saved web pages and graphics), he or she may be able to see information you have viewed recently on the Internet. You can clear your history or empty your cache file in your browser’s settings and should do this regularly.

Here’s how to do it

  • Internet Explorer
    Select Tools
    Select Internet Options
On General page, under Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files
Under History, click on Clear History
    Click OK

  • Netscape
    Select Edit
    Select Preferences
Under Navigator in left column, click on History. In right column select Clear History
    Click on Clear Location Bar
    Click OK

  • On older versions of Netscape
Pull down Options menu. Select Network Options
Select Cache and click on Clear Disk Cache

  • AOL
    Pull down Members menu
    Select Preferences
Click on WWW icon. Select Advanced Purge Cache

  • Mac users
    Select Edit
    Select Preferences
    Click on Clear history
    Cache: click on Empty now

    Log out
Remember to log out of iVillage when you leave, otherwise your member name will be stored and show up on the homepage when you next visit. To log out, click on this log out link, at the top of any message board or on the iVillage homepage.

Although these security tips won’t remove all traces, they will help to cover most of your tracks. Many browsers have features that display recently visited sites. The safest way to surf the Internet is at your local library, an Internet cafe, a friend’s house, or at work – providing your employer doesn’t mind.
