When a friend becomes an enemy

by Sally Ann Lasson

question
Dear Sally Ann
My boyfriend and I have been together for a year now and we're madly in love. The problem is my friend. She fancies him. She liked him before we started going out and I don't think she ever stopped. She always talks about him and even took round a bottle of wine to his mum for Christmas. Shortly after we started going out she tried it on with his brother and now she's with a good friend of my boyfriends. It seems that she is always trying to get close to my boyfriend. Everywhere I turn, she is there, right behind me. I don't know what to do. Help!

This is what you should do - get rid of this person immediately. She is not your friend, she is your enemy. She would steal your boyfriend in a second if she could. She's impinging on your territory, she's trying to chum up to his mother, his brother and now his friend. She's circling you and she'd trying to break up your relationship. You know the how and you know the why, all she's waiting for is the when.

Give her the cold shoulder. Don't return her phone calls, get her off the phone quickly with an excuse if she calls you. Don't see her, back out of any joint plans you and your circle have. Don't tell her why, just say that you're busy. If she presses you, flannel.

Tell your boyfriend that you don't want to see this woman again but wait until it comes up naturally. Tell him she scares you and you think she's a bit weird. Don't go into much detail. Act vulnerable and if forced say something like 'I don't want to rubbish her, and you know I used to like her, but lately she's been acting very strangely with me. 'Tell him it's a vibe thing that you can't quite put your finger on. Conclude the conversation swiftly by sighing and saying 'oh, well, some friendships just run out of steam.'

You can't be nailed on any of this. She wouldn't hesitate to put it about that you're paranoid so don't give any of them the opportunity to say as much. She's already taken up quite enough of your time.

Oh, and by the way, don't forget to take a bottle of wine over to your boyfriend's mother.
