Why men do the running

by Sally Ann Lasson

question

Dear Sally Ann,
Why is it that men still have to do all the chasing? Women have obtained virtually all they wanted in the equality stakes and yet it is still the male who has to expose himself to rejection and who has games played with his feelings (don't ring him, be 'out' when he does ring, don't return his calls, always be first to finish the phone call, etc, etc). Why should we put up with it? A much easier and straightforward way would be for a universal truce to be declared. 'I'll be honest with you if you're honest with me.' It would save an awful lot of messing about.
Richard

answer

Dear Richard,
My God, do you really believe that we like having to play arch games of manipulation all the time? Do you honestly think we want to spend our evenings plucking our hairs out and reading The Rules? Don't you know that we'd all much prefer to have sex on the first date and say 'I love you, will you marry me?' in the morning?
And why do we do it? We do it for you. We do it because men need to have their hands held and be led along an emotional path that will make them happy. It's something to do with mothers, nappies and learning to pee standing up. The truce is declared at the altar when women know they've done a good job and can henceforth put their hair in a ponytail and loll on the sofa watching repeats of American sitcoms. Then we can get on to the real work of having actual babies.
