I fell for a rock star

by Sally Ann Lasson

question

Dear Sally Ann,
I've been really dumb. I fell for a rock star, who dumped me because he already had a girlfriend. Now there's this big hole where I know that he fits in my life. All I can do now is go out, get drunk, and inevitably, do something stupid. He told me to keep the fantasy - whatever that means. I feel utterly lost. This is so unlike me. Shall I try to win him over? Please help, I think I'm going to end up a stalker...

answer

Dear Nancy,
How thrilling to have been romanced by a rock star! That's something to tell your friends. But what goes up inevitably goes down and now you've hit the ground very hard. Reality bites. When this man told you to 'keep the fantasy' he meant that you should try and think of it as an exciting adventure that was out of real time. I don't think you are about to become a mad stalker or you wouldn't be asking me my advice about it, you'd be too busy on the phone. Leave him alone and leave the memory intact as a special thing that once happened. When things don't work out with men, even quite ordinary ones, it causes us to feel futile and lost. By all means go out and sometimes get drunk but don't do anything stupid. Don't punish yourself because you are hurt; try and be good to yourself. Be as productive as you can be. The next time an interesting man comes your way, you'll want to look like you have a life, won't you?
