The after effects of abortion

Unfortunately I'm having an abortion next week. I'm worried that this will affect my relationship with my boyfriend and harm our sex life. I am hoping there will be no bad side effects. I haven't been told of any, but can you give me any advice?

Medically speaking, I can't comment on the side effects of a termination. Speak to your doctor and make sure he or she answers your questions fully.
Psychologically and emotionally, there is a very small chance that you might experience a backlash after termination. People do have regrets, feel sadness and guilt - and if there's conflict between a couple on whether to go ahead with the termination or not, there may be some anger hiding in there too. All those negative feelings can affect your sex life.
But there is a lot you can do to prevent that happening. First, make sure that you are sure about your decision to have a termination and that the matter is settled between you and your boyfriend. If you have any doubts, talk them through and perhaps ask for some counselling support before the operation.
Second, if you start feeling wobbly after the termination, again talk through your feelings with your boyfriend and go back to your doctor or Family Planning Clinic for emotional support.
Third, remember that the vast majority of women don't regret their terminations after the event. Whether or not they get upset straight after, as time passes they begin to believe they made the right decision. So the chances are that even if you do feel unhappy, in time you'll realise that all was for the best.
