Top 10 tips for life
Change your life for good with these tried-and-trusted life-coaching techniques
First of all, do yourself a favour and forget making New Year Resolutions, this year or any other. Whether it's losing weight, giving up smoking or getting to bed earlier, New Year's resolutions rarely last beyond the middle of February - but don't beat yourself up - the desire to better yourself; to look and feel your absolute best or to live a great life will still be there. And becoming inspired and committed to doing things you love is key to better mental and physical health and helps to boost your immune system at the same time. So, this year, reach your goals and try my top 10 tactics to change your life for the better.
1. Raise your expectations
Your upbringing will have enforced certain personal expectations within you. This be more obvious with regard to money and the type of home you have. Identify these outdated expectations, then decide to throw off these limitations and create some new, exciting goals for yourself.
2. Don't tell everyone
This is the very opposite of what traditional New Year Resolvers do. They tell everyone their resolutions and end up demoralised from the start. If anyone quizzes you about what you'd like to change in your life this year, keep it light and say you might have a few ideas up your sleeve, then change the subject quickly. People aren't malicious, it's simply that we are all conditioned to expect people, and ourselves, to weaken and give up on our goals. So don't even invite that possibility to begin with.
3. Take yourself seriously
Decide that these resolutions are for life, not just for this year. What sort of life do you want? Where do you want to live? Who with? Are you doing a job you love? Ask yourself, 'What would I do if I knew I couldn't fail?' Then take this question out to lunch with you. Have a relaxed look at it over coffee and write this heading down: 'What do I really want?' When you have a list of 30, mark the 10 items that you really, really want. Then decide which three items you feel you must work towards achieving - those are the things that you owe it to yourself to put serious effort into.
