How to tell someone they're driving you crazy

by Mary Mitchell

question
How do you tell someone that at this moment they are driving you absolutely, positively, insane?
Janice

answer
Dear Janice
Ouch! Just don’t say, ‘You are driving me absolutely, positively crazy.’ Instead, try something like, ‘I think I better take a break right now. Otherwise, I might start snapping at people and regret it.’

Be sure to say this with some humour and not to sound accusatory. If you change the dialogue, don't change the ‘I’ language; that is, focus your comments on your personal experience and feelings. Nobody can argue with them. Otherwise, the person who is irritating you will just get defensive, and communication will stop - when we feel attacked, we stop listening and begin to build our defences. And after all, wouldn't getting involved in a minor war make you feel even more frazzled?
