My boyfriend has acne on his privates!

Dear Dr Patti
My boyfriend has severe acne on his genitals and anus. He has never mentioned it, so may be he doesn't care? Should I say something to him? Please help me - I really love him, but his condition is a real turn-off.

Dear H
You must love this man a lot to endure something that can be construed as quite unappealing, to say the least. I suggest that you and he have a candid talk about his health, specifically about his condition down there. Perhaps he doesn't even realise he is so inflamed.

He needs to have a thorough check-up, arranged through his GP or local Well Man clinic. Certain antibiotics and topical skin solutions have been found to be successful in combating severe acne. Diet, hygiene and stress may be contributing factors.

The most important things you can do: offer gentle support; encourage him to get proper medical assessment and treatment; talk to him about personal hygiene; and try to find ways of coping with the problem yourself. If you can’t overcome the disgust that you feel, it won't be long before your eyes are wandering elsewhere... out of his life. So, find the courage to talk to him about this and help him find a successful solution.
