Post-hysterectomy and no sex drive

by Dr Patti Britton

question
Dear Dr Patti
I had a hysterectomy in October 1997 and still have very little sex drive. How long, on average, does it take before things get back to normal?
R

answer
Dear R
That depends. If you have had a complete hysterectomy you may never recover, as this includes removal of the tubes and ovaries as well as the uterus. One of the functions of your ovaries is to produce the hormones necessary for you to feel and behave biologically like a woman.

Hysterectomy causes a false menopause. The body stops producing the hormones that enable you to conceive. Your desire for sex depends on a balanced hormonal system. Hormone replacement therapy, HRT, via your GP, can help re-establish this. Or there are a number of natural herbal alternatives you could try. You’ll find these in health food shops, but, ideally, see a registered homeopath for a personal assessment and prescription.
