An early hysterectomy has removed my sex drive
Dear Dr Patti
Im only 34, I've had a hysterectomy, and I now have no interest in sex. My husband and I are becoming increasingly frustrated. Help!

I am sorry to hear that it was necessary for you to have this surgical procedure at so young an age. That must have been emotionally difficult for both of you. There are medical interventions that can help you regain some of your sexual appetite, but the first step may be some inner healing, not the physical kind.
Make sure that you are not dwelling on the fact that you will no longer be able to become pregnant and have children. So many women are conditioned into thinking that they are not-quite-a-woman if they can't reproduce. Of course, that's nonsense, as being a woman is defined in many other ways. If you are thinking along those lines, however, counselling may allay your concerns.
As for rejuvenating that sex drive, you have several options. If you had your ovaries removed along with your uterus in the hysterectomy, then your body is no longer manufacturing the hormones that contribute to sex drive. In this case, speak to your GP about hormone replacement therapy (HRT). There are also several herbs (such as ginseng), available in health shops, which can boost the post-surgical healing process, and help rebalance your hormonal system. Ideally see a registered homeopath for a personal prescription.
Finally, give yourself plenty of time to recharge. Start sharing simple pleasures with your partner. Explore the sensual side of your relationship and keep talking with him about how you are feeling as you re-establish your sexuality. Best of luck.
