My boyfriend goes to strip clubs

Dear Sally Ann,
My boyfriend is a Sales Director and frequently travels. He says that taking his clients and customers to strip clubs is a part of his job – to entertain and schmooze with the boys. I’m irritated that this is the only type of evening entertainment he can find. What’s the fascination with strippers, anyway? I feel like he’s cheating on me because he does this on a regular basis, or am I just insecure?

Dear Mary
The whole stripper/lap dancing sub-culture thing is one of the most repulsive aspects of modern life. I’m not surprised you’re irritated and, no, you’re not being insecure. Have you ever seen a group of drunken blokies ogling a woman as she rubs herself up and down a pole? It’s so depressing, it’s like being inside a Martin Amis novel. But you have a practical problem here.

If it’s part of your boyfriend’s job description to entertain clients in this way, what can you do about it? He’s not going to suddenly decide to take them to a piano recital, is he? It feels like betrayal because it is, in a way, a betrayal of civilised life and the respect due to women by their men. There are two types of men, those for whom this sort of recreational behaviour is normal, and those for whom it isn’t. Maybe you’d prefer the other type.
