In the UK, if you want to build estates, roads, industrial estates, power plants or rubbish tips you need planning permission. And until last week, planning permission was relatively hard to get - although there are plenty of instances where attending the right dinners with the right people could twist some political arms, I’m sure…
It’s helped soften the not-so-shocking news that a cool £250,000 could buy you an intimate dining experience with our Prime Minister so that he could influence national policy in favour of your company. If buying legislation was your bag. This practice has been widespread with other political parties (yes Labour, we’re looking at you!) but Cameron promised to do away with sleaze. Now it seems he’s King of the Political Gigolos!

International Women’s Day was last week, and David Cameron was busy waxing lyrical about how he was going to make wolf-whistling a criminal offense. Um, okay. What about this though: today it was reported that over 80% of rapes and sexual assaults go unreported. Perhaps Mr Cameron should look into this issue too?

Since the start of the recession the advertising landscape has changed. These days we’re flooded with cheap TV adverts peddling their quick fix loans, offering cash for gold and to pawn your goods. So much so that we now consider it normal. It’s a sign of the times…
This week Cardinal Keith O’Brien – the Catholic Top Dog in the UK – warned that society will break down if David Cameron allows same-sex marriage in the UK. Which was a suitably apocalyptic knee-jerk response from the conservative-end of Catholicism. Personally, I’d expect nothing less.

Last week I was amused to read that Ireland are entering Jedward into the Eurovision once again. I don’t mind Jedward – they’re perfect for Eurovision. Bright, bouncy, nonsensical and completely unhinged. Jedward is what happens when you combine X-Factor, glitter and too many Skittles for breakfast. They can be entertaining in a very weird and wrong way. But let’s not pretend that talent has anything to do with their appeal, unless it’s a talent for bouncing.

We’re in the thick of awards season, and what a year it’s been! Adele cleaned up in the Grammys and flipped the bird at the Brits. We’ve had UK films and actors scoop several nominations in the BAFTAs and Oscars, and of course there’s been the red carpet action that we all know and love. We saw the tragic death of Whitney Houston, and the celebration of Amy Winehouse who died in 2011. It has been a huge emotional rollercoaster. So here is our awards-fest round-up, with a few Oscar predictions thrown in for good measure! By Sian Claire Owen
Last night I very much enjoyed watching the Brits, it’s always good fun. Not to be taken seriously for it’s musical value (it’s the same old artists churning out the same old vapid noises), but it’s always amusing watching the cock-ups. I am not a nice person.

It has come to my attention that quite a lot of young people don’t have jobs. Not just the usual benefit scrounger, immigrant, X-box addict scumbags – I know the type. No, shockingly, even some educated youngsters from the Home Counties are finding it hard to get onto the job market!

I love news, but sometimes I get the feeling that the daily news reels are rotated in 24-hour cycles with little change during the day. The stories I watch in the morning are generally repeated ad nauseum until the 6 O’Clock News, and then Newsnight. And not just on TV, but in the papers, on the radio and all over the Internet. It’s depressing.

When I was younger I really wanted a big family when I grew up. I wanted three boys and two girls, and a fabulous husband to boot. In my mind’s eye I saw that we’d live in a beautiful big town house in the leafy suburbs, we’d have a caravan, a four-wheel drive and we’d go on family cycling holidays in the South of France.
Hold your horses people… Lego is going pink and pastel! Oh the horror!!!! This is part of a sinister bid to encourage the next generation of girls to develop their skills as princesses and housewives. Or is it?
They used to say that money makes the world go round, but I think that oil does. I know that oil equates to money, but it’s so much more than that. Black gold is as much about power and control as it is about economics. And absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Celebrity super-couple Beyonce and Jay-Z are celebrating the birth of their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Whilst we’re happy for the new parents, we can’t help but ponder on the strange choice of name. When famous folk produce kids they tend to gift them with unusual names that either serve as parental personality stamps or help them stand out in the heady world of showbiz. But as we know, sometimes celebs take their naming duties a bit too far – and it stands to reason that the bigger the celebrity the weirder the kid’s name will be. We just hope that none of these names ever filter into real life…By Sian Claire Owen

This week old Pillow Face (David Cameron) stormed into Brussels and gave those dastardly Europeans a taste of the British Bulldog. Without asking anyone else in Parliament apart from a group of hard-line right-wingers, not even his political bedfellow Nick Clegg, he unilaterally vetoed an important EU treaty designed to prevent the collapse of the Euro and deal with the debt crisis.

X-Factor is over. Little Mix won and we can all go home. I haven’t really been an avid follower this year – I thought it was a tad boring. But, like a good Agatha Christie, I always like to catch the very end to find out who the culprits were.
It was semi-final night on Strictly Come Dancing and didn’t we know it?! Saturday night’s show was a sheer tour de force from all five couples and that was reflected in the fact that we saw ten fabulous performances and TEN standing ovations. It truly was a night to remember.
We really thought we were going to go out this week so we put everything into the tango and it paid off! It’s the highest score of the Argentinian tango ever in the history of Strictly Come Dancing. I felt like it was a comeback and that we made it into the final because of that dance – we worked as a team from the beginning of the series and for the weekend we gave it everything we had.

This week the Guardian, in conjunction with the London School of Economics (LSE), published findings of their recent research that looked at why the riots happened earlier this year. What makes this research particularly important is that they spoke directly to the looters and rioters, to see what made them go on the rampage and cause so much destruction.

I’ve never really paid much attention to the goings on at Topman or Moss Bross. I just don’t care what blokey cardigan is en vogue this season. I was a little surprised, though, to learn that Topman have recently had to pull two of their T-Shirts because they were so offensive. And we’re talking about really vile stuff.

Here at iVillage UK we love Russell Grant, he’s top banana and I’ve been enjoying his blogs cataloging his Strictly Come Dancing escapades. But I must admit that I find his recent revelations slightly loopy.
Today’s news is littered with the weird and wonderful. Never mind the next probably war with Iran (something I don’t even want to think about), or the endless cuts and stunted economic growth - I want to read about stuff that doesn’t want to make me hide under my bed.
Home is where the heart is - preferably beneath bricks and mortar with central heating and double-glazing. But what if you can’t afford to get onto the property ladder?
Well, there we are - all good things must come to an end. Saturday’s Strictly Come Dancing Wembley show was an exhilarating, exciting exit for me and I could have asked for a better send off.
I hate smoking. It’s grim. It smells awful, it stains your teeth a yacky brown colour and makes your breath smell like a filthy old sock. Kissing a bloke who smokes is like kissing a wet, sticky ashtray. It gives your skin a sickly grey palor and ravages your youth. And it gives you cancer and heart disease.

Anti-Capitalist protesters have been camping outside St Paul’s Cathedral for the past two weeks. There are only a couple of hundred campaigners, but this relatively small group have raised huge questions about the stance of the Church of England on the evils of unbridled, unregulated capitalism.
In the world of news there are certain things that will always get a certain section of society foaming at the mouth - immigration, tax, the environment, cuts, unemployment and the X-Factor being some examples. The European Union is another humdinger guaranteed to get people’s knickers in a twist.
The human population of the planet hits 7 billion this month, and the number is set to rise to 15 billion by 2100. For life Earth this is catastrophic – the world simply won’t be able to cope with the strain of so many people.
Yesterday as I was messing around on Twitter, as you do, I noticed that ‘Gaddafi’ had started to trend. Catherine Tate has gotten lucky and has ended up dating Take That heart-throb (and generally all round nice bloke) Jason Orange. Queue incredulous headlines about ‘Unlikely/oddball couples’, which I think is pants. Catherine Tate is an attractive woman, who also happens to be very clever, funny and hugely successful. Jason Orange is probably over the moon that he’s landed such a catch! But he’s broken ‘The Rules’ because he’s not going out with some fake plastic blow-up dolly lookalike. Good luck to them, I say.

I woke up in the early hours of this morning to the sound of hailstones crashing against my windows as if they were in a psychotic rage. It sounded as though my entire flat was under attack with gunfire. As the sun rose, the sky was heavy with murky burnt-orange clouds that bled into a foreboding grey on the horizon. And it was bloomin freezing. 'Aye, winter’s definitely on it’s way in,' I thought.

Most of us are fortunate to have avoided the creepy, stalky ex. You know, the type that hacks into your email account, posts your lingerie to your dad and sends you long-winded letters full of veiled threats when you try to end things. Not that I’m talking from experience (ahem).
So we are through to the next week of Strictly Come Dancing, which is great – it’s hard work but I am really enjoying it was always. Jason Donovan is a fantastic partner and works very hard – he is a perfectionist so sometimes this can take longer but I’m happy to have a dedicated and hard working partner.

We women are told by society that it is bad, bad, bad to be promiscuous. The notion that we have to be chaste, wholesome mothers in the kitchen and enthusiastic sex kittens in the bedroom is as alive and kicking as it was in the 1950s. But what if there was a scientific explanation for being promiscuous? What if we are hardwired to bonk a lot of blokes in our lifetimes and we just can’t help ourselves?

Weeks after the riots that swept England more details are emerging about who was actually involved. So far we have a group of unruly hoodies mixed with a couple of ‘respectables’ including a primary school teaching assistant and a millionaire’s daughter (probably seen as a cry for help because she’s not from a rough estate). But it’s easy to generalise. And we have!

Do criminals get away with murder in this country? There’s no doubt that the current penal system is a bit of a joke. I wrote last week that in the wake of the riots punishment was needed, and that it needed to be harsh and public. But I thought this would apply to the people directly involved in looting and wanton vandalism. I didn’t realise that our twentieth century legal system would skip happily back to Dickensian times and start imposing draconian sentences on all and sundry.

Norway has been shaken to the core, and the rest of Europe is stunned. Last Friday 32-year old Anders Behring Breivik murdered 93 people in cold blood, most of whom were young kids and teenagers. And for what? Nothing. What a dreadful, dreadful waste of innocent life.
Today as schools break up and kids run through the streets reveling in their freedom researchers aim to slam down on their fun. Why? Because they ‘shun’ vegetables in favour of delicious, fatty, stodgy, tasty food. Teens turn their back on the healthy options whilst embracing temptation with wild abandon, cramming Maccy Ds into their spotty faces while all the researchers can do is gently weep.
Hacking. I feel as though I’ve been spat out the far end of a scandalous tunnel. Is it over? Maybe, maybe not – there are rumours that allegations of even more dodgy shenanigans will surface, but for now I’m suffering from hacking fatigue. The phone hacking saga. I’d written extensively about it this week. From Rebekah Brook’s arrest, top brass resignations in the Met, the tragic and mysterious ‘unsuspicious’ death of whistleblower journalist Sean Hoare, the anarcho-Hactivist hacking of The Sun Online, and the appearance of Rupert and James Murdoch before a group of disgruntled MPs.
Scandal and gossip have ruled the roost for the past two weeks with the phone hacking scandal, and boy has it been dramatic! We’ve seen high profile arrests, resignations and recriminations. The News of the World was shut down with about an hours notice for the employees. Rupert Murdoch, Media Mogul extraordinaire, withdrew his bid for BSkyB and faces a grilling in Parliament. The Chief Officer of the Met has stepped down, and even the Prime Minister is up to his neck in it. If ever a story had legs, this one does. There are plenty of people embroiled in this mess, so to save on confusion here is the iVillage UK Hacking Who’s Who (AKA ‘They’re All In It Together’). Enjoy! By Sian Claire Owen
Earlier this month the BBFC elected to ban the release of the shock horror flick ‘Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)’ because it was too horrible to show and (get this) it poses a real risk to those who view it. Well, anyone who wants to see a film about scatological-based surgical torture porn needs their head looking at anyway. So, the BBFC has banned 28 films from release since 2000, and for your pleasure we decided to create our top 10 list of banned films. But to soften the blow we added calming images of fluffy animals. Enjoy!
The saga of the phone hacking scandal refuses to die down. It’s impossible to be bored with it because every day spews out another sensational revelation, sacking, resignation or high-profile arrest.
Well, what a to-do this morning! I was going to write some celebrity goss because we’ve not had too much of that recently, what with the whole Hacking debacle. But then I was hit with the news that Rebekah Brooks has resigned as Chief Executive of News International and frankly this blew everything else out of the water.

Jeez Louise we are living in strange times. For the past few decades Parliament has been kowtowing to Murdoch’s News Corporation for fear of bad publicity – but now the worm has turned, Parliament showed us that she still has teeth, she snarled and growled and Murdoch withdrew his bid for BSkyB. Big news indeed.
It all started with Big Brother and its magical power to turn ordinary people into Z-list celebs. These days, however, there are reality stars who are more famous than some Hollywood ones. Fame and fortune have never been so accessible and these reality celebrities show us why!
On the surface of things, David Cameron doesn’t appear to be having a good week. The hacking scandal has exploded like Vesuvius and Cameron is tarnished by his close association with former NOTW editors Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks, not to mention the fact that he bent over backwards to give Rupert Murdoch BSkyB on a plate. Guilty by association? Probably, IMHO.

If I were to say the words ‘Phone Hacking Scandal’ you’d probably think of Sienna Miller and lawsuits. However, the News of the World is alleged to have taken gutter journalism to a slimy new low.
