This berry-flavoured liqueur, once the preserve of middle-class Victorian ladies, is now a trendy drink that tastes best when made at home

- Rinse the berries, discarding any that look bruised or burst.
- Prick each berry or so times (traditionally done with the thorns from the blackthorn bush, on which the sloes grow).
- Place all ingredients in a lidded container and shake regularly over six to eight weeks.
- When the liqueur is a deep red colour, strain and leave for a further month before drinking.
