The health benefits of swimming

We all know swimming is a great workout, but the real appeal lies in its all-inclusive nature. Whatever your fitness levels and motivation, a dip in the pool promotes many social and psychological benefits.
Swimming expert Glen Heidke says: 'In physiological terms, swimming is a great full body work out. Regular swimming benefits the individual through improved cardio-vascular fitness, muscular endurance and strength.'
An all-inclusive workout, swimming is open to all ages, shapes and sizes, whether you come from a competitive background or you are more inclined to a paddle at a slower pace. But the social and psychological benefits are often underestimated.
There is nothing quite like diving into a pool to cool down after a tough day on your feet or in the office, it can be an incredibly calming and soothing experience.
'Swimming can provide individuals with a chance to socialise with like minded people' Glen says, 'it's not all about hours following the black line up and down the pool. Whether it be a group swim, training, or just meeting up with friends for a paddle, putting in the hard yards together can be extremely motivating.'
Swimming can also compliment a pre-existing exercise routine: 'A quick swim prior to hitting the road or the gym is a great way of warming up, while jumping in the pool at the end of a tough land session can help promote recovery, cool down and relax the body.
As for the psychological benefits - swimming is relaxing, holistic and refreshing. The pool is a total change of environment and our bodies work differently underwater. 'Indirect benefits of Swimming include improved discipline and academic performance' Glen says, 'and nothing boosts one's self esteem like punching out 100 laps before work.'
And if physical complaints hold you back from most exercise, a dip in the pool offers a safe workout: 'The health benefits are particularly relevant to those recovering from injuries or during rehabilitation - kicking, water running, Aqua or basic swim sets can all give you a strong workout without placing the body under undue stress and strain.
'Let your arms and legs take over, switch off your medulla oblongata and enjoy!'
