A Jolie bad split
They were set up by their agents and for five years Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston were the wardrobe-coordinating couple of Hollywood's wet dreams.
But in 2005, Brad got a little distracted while filming Mr & Mrs Smith and fell for smouldering co-star Angelina Jolie.
The media hastily christened the new pair 'Brangelina' and marvelled at their super-beauty and ability to create/adopt/raise a multicultural array of infants while remaining ambitious, political and effortlessly cool. All the while Jen faded into the background...

Divorced and happy to holiday together
Bruce Willis and Demi Moore married in 1987 and had three daughters together: Rumer, Scout and Tallulah Belle.
The pair split in 1998 but have famously remained exceptionally close. Demi has been married to toyboy Ashton Kutcher since 2005 and Willis this year married Victoria's secret model Emma Hemming, both Demi and Bruce attended each other's weddings.

He and Aussie actress Kidman met in 1990 on the set of Days of Thunder and married that year.
But in 2001, citing 'irreconcilable differences', Cruise and Kidman split. There have been a raft of rumours about the relationship since, but whatever the reason, it would seem Kidman got out at the right time!

A right royal mess
Prince Charles and the late Lady Diana married in 1981 in a suitably lavish ceremony at St Paul's cathedral and the country rejoiced.
But 15 unhappy years and one ill-fated Panorama interview later, the royal couple split amid all sorts of speculation, which has only heightened since Diana's death in 1997.
This ill-fated marriage is cloaked in conspiracy theories, suggestions of adultery and, apparently, a major case of the threatening mother-in-law.

Mick cheque
Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger met model Jerry Hall in 1977 but the air didn't marry until 1990 in a Hindu-inspired Bali ceremony.
After nine years, Hall had the marriage anulled, on the basis the ceremony had not been valid under either English law.
The split came after it emerged that Jagger had fathered a child with Brazilian model Luciana Morad and Hall said he had been unfaithful throughout their 23-year relationship.

A gristly end
Pop tart and queen of reinvention Madonna married mockney director Guy Ritchie in an uber-hyped and protected ceremony at Skibo castle, Scotland in 2000.
But Madge and Ritchie split last year after media allusions to a connection between Madonna and baseball star Alex Rodriguez.
Things got really nasty when, during a concert in Boston, Madge dedicated one of her songs to the 'emotionally retarded', adding: 'you may know a few people like that, God knows I do.'

Ooh, just look at her scheming eyes! Animal rights campaigner and former model Heather Mills was married to former Beatle Paul McCartney for four years, but their marriage came to a bitter end in 2006 and the papers had a field day.
Suggestions that Mills was a gold digger did abound, and Mills made countless television appearances slamming the claims.

Trailer trash car crash
Time was us simple British folk didn't even know the meaning of trailer trash, but thanks to pop disaster Britney's marriage to backing dancer and general fame-grabber Kevin 'K-Fed' Federline, it didn't take us long to catch on.
Rumours of marital problems dogged the two from the start and after numerous rows, Britney filed for divorce, without informing her husband.
In their four years of marriage, Brit and K-Fed had two sons who were later at the centre of a messy custody battle.
