Calcara Beach, Panarea, The Aeolian islands
The Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago just off the northern coast of Sicily, and, in our opinion, Panarea is jewel in the crown.
The bright yellow sand of Calcara means it stands out from its other black sandy, costal counter parts, add the sulphur stained multi-coloured rocks and this is not your average beach paradise.
The Panareans used to believe Calcara beach to be the entrance to the underworld because of the steaming volcanic vents spread across the sand. In reality, Calcara is anything but hellish.
