When I finally plucked up the courage to go short - my hair used to reach the middle of my back - I instantly realised it was the right decision. I put myself in the capable hands of Alexa Chung’s stylist George Northwood at Daniel Hersheson, and left the salon with a super-cool, chic short bob that received endless compliments and even increased my confidence levels, as I was no longer able to hide behind my hair.
“The past two Vogue and Elle covers have featured short hair, and cuts that evoke that whole Twiggy era of the 60s are new, fresh and totally on trend,” confirms George Northwood. “Low maintenance and easy-to-style, they also look brilliant teamed with a bold, all over hair colour.”

- “Going short is a great idea if you want a big change,” says International creative director for HOB salons, Akin Konizi. The main advantage of short hair is the way it exposes the face and accentuates features - it can define cheekbones and draw attention to the eyes, making it great for those who want a minimalist, low maintenance approach to their look.”
- If you have long, fine hair it may also be limp and lifeless. By going shorter and maybe adding a few layers, it will instantly appear thicker, more luxurious and shapelier.
- Shorter hair is easy to style and manage and takes half the time to dry than longer hair.
- A completely different haircut will freshen up your image and you’ll look at both your wardrobe and make-up in a different way.
- Short hair is a lot more versatile than you think: “You can choose to wear it cute, smooth and groomed, or more textured for an edgy finish - it’s all about what you feel comfortable with,” says Akin.
So how do you end up with a really great short cut that works for you? Akin Konizi believes that the key to making short hair work is understanding exactly what kind of cut will suit your facial shape and lifestyle. “Your stylist will be able to advise you on the style that will best compliment your features, personal style and daily haircare regime,” he advises.
George Northwood believes that pictures are a great way to communicate your likes and dislikes with your hairdresser: “Find a picture of a style you like and take it to your appointment, then you can both discuss what your hair will and will not do style-wise, and what will suit you best.” Akin Konizi also recommends that you take pictures of a look you dislike to highlight what you would like to avoid.
However, don’t rush into making a decision. If you’re still unsure stick with your usual style for the time being, and at least you’ll have started to communicate with your hairdresser.
And once it’s done, don’t panic. It will probably take a few days to get used to it and your hair to settle in to its new style. But you’ll soon learn to love it and make the most of your new look - just in time for spring...
