Holiday saving tips

cheap travel tips Planning getaways can be costly. Try these tips from fellow iVillagers and book a break without blowing the budget.

When travelling and booking airfare, hotel, and/or car rentals, always ask if the company is running any specials. Many times, specials are not advertised and the information is not offered when booking. Just by asking, you could save yourself a bundle!

If you're looking for a weekend getaway, all the major airlines have weekend specials. Often, you can just go to an airlines' website and sign-up to have them mailed to you. The emails often contain information on cheap car rentals and hotel rooms. You have to be flexible about where you go, but it can be exciting to not know until Wednesday where your weekend will be spent. Another tip is to get as many frequent flyer miles as possible. Most frequent flier plans also have deals where you can get miles for eating out and staying in hotels.

Eating out is often the most expensive part of being on holiday, so get a hotel room with a refrigerator. Get water, soda and juices for your stay as well as fruit and breakfast items. Going out for breakfast can really break the bank and you often end up eating more than you should! You can also get deli items and make sandwiches for lunches, too.

Always take a large bottle of water, a good book or tape, and some easily portable snacks when going on long plane rides with stopovers. You need water to avoid becoming dehydrated, and these items (food, drink & entertainment) keep you from looking at those expensive airport gift/book shops and restaurants.

We have found camping to be a fairly cheap way to get away. You can find some reasonable places to camp. You wouldn't even have to go very far. You could be a tourist in your own area and just check out some of what the tourists come to see in your part of the world. Sometimes the best places are right under our nose.

Bed and breakfasts are usually economical and can be really nice places to stay. Our next trip will be to a place where we can stay at a B&B and go biking in the mountains!
