Advice for travellers

beach umrellas

Don't leave home without reading our travel tips, and ensure that you have a safe and relaxing holiday.

Before you go

  • Check the Foreign & Commonwealth country-specific travel advice.
  • Make sure whoever you book with has an ABTA or ATOL number.
  • Get and check your travel insurance.
  • Take enough money for your trip and take travellers' cheques.
  • Ensure you have a valid passport.
  • Research your destination - and find out about the culture, customs and laws of the country.
  • Leave a copy of important documentation at home or with a trusted friend or relative.

While you're away

  • Retain copies of all your important documents and keep them separate from the originals in case any of them are lost or stolen.
  • Don't carry all your money and valuables with you. Ask about safety deposit facilities at your accommodation.
  • Use a money belt or inside pocket.
  • Keep tickets in a safe place.
  • Obey the law of the land of the country you are visiting. Find out the relevant laws and customs, and behave accordingly.
  • Avoid any involvement with drugs.
  • Ask advice on where to go and what to avoid. Consult your tour representative, hotel concierge, car hire staff, tourist information or the police.
  • When walking keep to well-lit public places. Areas that may be safe during the day may not be at night and if you find yourself in an undesirable area, or one you are not sure about, head back the way you came.
  • When driving, keep doors locked and never leave anything on display if the car is unattended. Park legally and in a well-lit place.
  • Find out the number for emergency services in that country and also the location of the nearest British Government Representative. Any British national who gets into difficulty overseas can seek help from the nearest British diplomatic mission 24 hours a day. Where there is no British representative in a country, British nationals may instead contact the nearest EU Mission in that country.

If you have anything stolen

  • Contact your holiday representative and report it at once to the local police and get a statement about the loss. You will need it to claim insurance
  • Phone your bank at home to cancel credit cards and transfer money if needed.
  • Contact the issuing agent for your travellers' cheques
  • Talk to your holiday rep or airline agent about tickets
